What is reiki*?
Reiki is an ancient spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. It is the life energy that flows through all living things. Reiki exists in other countries and cultures with different titles and names. I am a student of the Usui Reiki Tradition from Japan which is the style of Reiki being practiced at The Studio Parra. Practitioners of this ancient healing art understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others. We are our own healers. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free-flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind are in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.
The key difference with Reiki compared to other forms of therapy is its non-invasive element, which makes it perfect for those who are uncomfortable with removing clothing for a massage, contact with needles in acupuncture, or treatments with applied pressure. If you respect personal boundaries, you may actually prefer Reiki to other therapies.
Please note that Reiki is meant to be used as a complement to traditional care or as a personal relaxation or stress-reducing tool. It is not a substitute for qualified medical or traditional care. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energy work using spiritually guided life force energy.

BENEFITS OF REIKI
A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. A session is pleasant and relaxing and is often utilized for one’s personal wellness.
The experience itself is often described as quite an emotional release. The therapy encourages deep relaxation, and to let go of negative emotions such as fear and anxiety. For anyone feeling emotionally overwhelmed or disconnected it can bring a sense of inner calm, much like with meditation. Some people even describe feeling a radiant glow around themselves, all contributing to an overall positive effect on the mind and body. Improving your emotional wellbeing could affect your physical self as well, with anxiety often manifesting itself in headaches, an upset stomach, or sore muscles.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?
*Due to the current pandemic, all sessions with The Studio Parra are virtual. However, in-person sessions are available by referral only.
A standard session is 60 to 90 minutes long. A discussion will take place during our initial session with me as your Reiki Practitioner. I will give a full rundown of the session and give you an opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues you are experiencing, along with what you are hoping to achieve from their session. For the actual session, you will rest comfortably on a massage table on your back or in a chair with your shoes removed. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed and you are always fully clothed; loose, comfortable clothing is suggested. A session can either be hands-on, where I will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where I will hold my hands slightly above your body. If you prefer not to be touched you can let me know before we begin. For a virtual/distance session, you will remain in the comfort of your own home, and the treatment from the session will be just as effective!
The session will then proceed as I make my way through the specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at your head and make my way down to your feet. As the recipient of this Reiki session, you might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. There is no hierarchy of experience. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing, and invigorating.
