Connecting to Reiki

I don’t even know where to start! Nothing has ever resonated as quickly as Reiki has and I believe that even after years of doing this work, it would be difficult to put into words what it truly means to me. If you study spirituality, there’s a concept of us actively choosing to be physical extensions of a spiritual journey. Because of this choice, I believe the soul inherently recognizes the things that are meant for us even if we have no conscious awareness of them and it’s up to us to remain open. Reiki has become something I’ve recognized as one of those things meant for me on my own beautiful journey.

But what exactly is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient healing practice and comes from the Japanese words ‘Rei,’ meaning universal, and ‘Ki,’ meaning life force energy. Reiki exists in other countries and cultures with different titles and names. I am a student of the Usui Reiki Tradition from Japan which is the style of Reiki I will be addressing. The life force energy of Reiki is also known as qi, chi, or prana which is a high vibrational, subtle energy that exists within us and all around us. Reiki as a practice is a form of energy healing through the laying on of hands. The practitioner facilitating this healing work acts as a channel for the universal life force energy to pass through them (their hands specifically) directly to the person receiving healing. It is considered “intelligent” because the energy transferred through the practitioner is not directed or manipulated in any way as it flows. This universal life force energy knows exactly where to go to provide the most optimal healing and aims to help the flow of energy in the body and removes blocks in a similar way to acupuncture or acupressure but more subtle and without direct application points. Improving the flow of energy around the body can enable relaxation, reduce pain, speed healing, and reduce other symptoms of illness. Reiki is a gentle technique that may increase life force energy and ultimately allows the body to come back into balance, promoting a healthier and happier life.

A more balanced life that leads to all these beautiful things has most definitely become a priority for me. Especially considering the world we currently live in. I don’t know what the long-term effects of this practice will bring, but the time I’ve spent studying this practice has led me on an incredible journey of self-discovery and unlearning in order to connect to my highest self. And although I have absolutely been fortunate to learn about and receive the healing benefits of Reiki, it did not come without some mental, emotional, and spiritual preparedness. Stay tuned to join me as I go down the rabbit hole towards acceptance through the all-loving healing power that is Reiki.
